Our Environmental Approach

Minimising the impacts of our business and maximising awareness are vital to Lyreco's strategic approach to environmental management. Our ISO 14001 certified managment system is pivotal to our success

Green claims

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

Currently Lyreco identifies products with sustainable credentials under the logo of a tree.

The aim is to assist customers to quickly identify which products may suit their sustainability agenda. Moving forward, Lyreco is working to gather data from suppliers which will allow us to classify products more concretely by adhering to the recommendations of the recognised level of ISO14021.

This particular international standard is defined for "self-claims" on products and gives definitions on key sustainable terms, such as Recycled, Biodegradable, Long-Life, etc.. At its core is the principle that such products must be "environmentally preferable".

Across Australia, our expanding range of green products is compliant with ACCC Green Claim Guidelines, ensuring that our customers are purchasing products with demonstrated environmental benefits.
All product claims are clearly defined in our catalogue and Online Ordering system in the associated product description.

In the future, we aim to enable all products with a sustainablility credential, that fall under the logo of the tree, to be able to be sub-categorised through the electronic ordering system (OLO) showing the detailed credentials.

Environmentally preferable products

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

It has always been a key consideration for Lyreco to be able to offer customers a wide
choice of products and this policy has been extended to ensure that environmentally
preferable products are a key component of this choice. With this in mind, Lyreco has
developed a broad range of sustainable products across all product categories over the last
few years.  We now have a range of over 700 common range international products that
have a sustainablity credential and there are more products selected locally to complement
this common range.

Our Product Management teams, at both Group and local levels, review the range every year. The
teams work hard to ensure that if an environmental alternative is available, at the right price, it will be
added to our range. Additionally, where it makes sense, we are actively looking to switch from regular to
environmentally preferable products.

When sourcing own brand products, environmental considerations are again at the forefront.

Within the subsidiaries, environmental targets may be in place within the Integrated Management
System to ensure that suppliers are challenged not only to develop products which are more
sustainable, but also to reduce packaging and consider different ways of delivery.

Material Safety Data Sheet

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

Detailed information on a product’s safety attributes is just a click
away as Lyreco now makes the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
for each relevant product available via our online ordering tool, OLO.

  • The MSDS is a form that details the specific hazardous substance(s) present in a product including first aid and how to react in case of an emergency

  • The MSDS enables businesses to inform their employees of how to use and store a product safely within the working environment. It forms part of Health & Safety and Environmental considerations.

No additional packaging

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

More than 50% of deliveries are sent to our customers with no
additional packaging.
Customers receive the goods exactly as they were sent to us.

This simple way of handling paper, toners, envelopes, etc. This
saves a huge amount of cardboard.

No additional wrapping from suppliers

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

Whenever it is possible, we ask our suppliers to eliminate the use of stretch film on cardboard pallets.

After several tests in France and Belgium, this process started July 1st 2010 with some key suppliers and has now been rolled out globally.

This initiative especially means:
  • less plastic film, a contribution towards our environmental approach;
  • no more time spent on unwrapping and a safer working environment.

Cardboard minimisation

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

When packaging is needed, the system automatically selects the smallest possible box to fit all items.

The boxes are then cut to size, saving up to 10% of truck space and reducing both fuel consumption and the quantity of cardboard packaging sent to customers.

Electric vans

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

With the successful launch of two zero-emission
vehicles for deliveries in the London area,
we are looking for ways to repeat the experience
in the main European capitals and cities.

The objective is to reduce both noise and emissions in residential and retail areas.

At the same time, Lyreco is investigating other technologies to make sure the selected options are the most relevant ones taking into account all relevant factors (e.g. purchasing cost, effective impact on the environment).

Eco driving

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

How can we reduce the impact
our cars and vans have
on the environment?

  • Eco driving is a way of driving which allows for a reduction in vehicle energy consumption and air pollution.
    We regularly check the tyre pressure of our vans to increase fuel-efficiency and safety. Our drivers read traffic
    flow for a less "stop-start" drive and use air-conditioning conservatively.

  • Eco driving even improves the safety of our people by reducing the number of accidents.

  • In 2010, Eco Driving was added to the Group Delivery
    Best Practices which involves all Lyreco’s subsidiaries.

Here are couple of effective results of the Eco Driving actions achieved in our countries:

2009 versus 2008:
on average, 7% fuel saving per car fleet.
2010 versus 2009: on average, 5% fuel saving per car fleet.

2009 versus 2008:
on average, 5% fuel saving per car fleet.
2010 versus 2009: on average, 8% fuel saving per car fleet.

Optimised delivery programs

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

The main impact we have on the environment is the impact
of kilometres driven to have our customers' orders delivered.

Besides using eco-friendly vehicles (electric) and devices (start/stop system), we are testing a software that could reduce the number of kilometres driven per delivery route without impacting service to our clients.

The first step is to assess the efficiency of the vehicle routing software by comparing the kilometres driven on certain routes to what the system proposes. Should this test be successful, we will pursue the next step by doing an
on-board trial with the objective of rolling the system out within the whole Group.

Sorting & recycling

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

As the awareness of non-renewable resource depletion grows, recycling is becoming the norm. Rather than simply throwing all rubbish into the one bin, our employees must segregate different types of recyclables before they are delivered to a recycling centre.

This is managed through a dedicated Waste Management program that is part of our Environmental Management program.
This function is audited on a regular basis as it is part of our ISO 14001 certification.
Yearly targets and objectives are also set for this program.
In Lyreco, our key areas of waste management are as follows:
  • Distribution centres with cardboard boxes, plastic pallet wrap and pine-wood pallets;
  • Building maintenance with the disposal of fluorescent tubing used in office areas and distribution centre levels;
  • Computer hardware with obsolete equipment;
  • General business activities in head office areas – kitchen waste, used paper, disposal of other materials including plastics.

Power savings

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS
Power consumption is identified in our “Significant Environmental
Aspects”.
In accordance with our IS0 14001 certification (Environmental
Management System), every year each country defines and reviews
objectives, targets and programs to reduce and optimise Lyreco's power
consumption.
This process is audited on a yearly basis by an external body.

Here are examples of programmes achieved in our countries.

POLAND
Our Polish maintenance team has carried out several actions in the warehouse: lowering of light rails (from 7.6 m to 4.5 m), reduction of the amount of light bulbs and possibility to light any specific areas of the warehouse.
These measures allow for a saving of over 206,000 Kwh per year (12% of total consumption), enough to light 1000 light bulbs during 2.5 years.

SWITZERLAND
Several “quick win” actions have enabled 40% power savings in their Head-Office:
  • Install a building control system, which turns off all lights during the 'night-period‘;
  • Dedicated focus on over-used lighting in specifc areas;
  • Reduce the running hours of air-compressor machines;
  • Reduce the cooling of the IT computer room level: each degree saves 6% energy;
  • Eliminate the heating-systems at the individual office workstations;
  • Set up “automatic turn-off” switch for all copy-machines and coffee-machines, so that the electricity is switched off from 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m.’’

DENMARK

Initially our new buildings constructed in 2005 / 2006 were built taking into account electrical and energy saving considerations.
Afterwards, several additional actions have been taken to continue reducing power consumption.

Here are couple of examples:

Warehouse lights
Every section of the warehouse has been divided into three smaller sections and by lighting on an "as needed" basis, we have reduced our power consumpition. With an easy press of a button we can change from having just two rows per section lit, which is mostly the case during summer. During winter we often have four of six rows lit, and on days where we need to have extra strong light, for example during maintenance we have all six rows lit.

Office sensors
Sensors have been set up so that they light up the rooms when someone enters it. These sensors have then been modified so that they take just a little longer to light up and they turn off the light a bit quicker after you have left the room then before. Quick fix, but efficient.

All-in-all, these “small” adjustments along with communication to the staff about the importance of powering down their workstations, we have saved about 24% energy per year, compared to our first year in the new building in Denmark.

Our buildings

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

Our new buildings are designed and constructed to save
energy and minimise our impact on the environment.
By having “environmentally friendly buildings”, Lyreco also
expects to reduce operation and maintenance costs.

Here are a couple of examples:

Our Head Quarters in Germany
is the last building completed
in Lyreco.

A lot of technical equipment has been installed to reduce energy consumption.
By making some fine adjustments, we were able to optimise the power
consumption:
  • for cooling or warming the building;
  • for lighting different areas.
Examples:
The ventilation system (instead of air-conditioning system) is adjusted to maximise the use of fresh air.
The kitchen has an energy optimisation system with different levels so that it takes into account peak and off-peak usage.

NEW WAREHOUSE & INTEGRATED OFFICE ACCOMMODATION

In February 2012, we plan to move into our brand new building in Norway: a new warehouse and offices of a total of 7891 m2.

As part of that, we are committed to taking into account the three aspects of Lyreco's Sustainable Development approach: the environmental, the social and the economic.

In accordance with the Norwegian Environmental Regulation (one of the most demanding in the world), a lot of technical equipment and techniques will be used to reduce and optimise our energy consumption.
Here are a couple of examples:

  • Heating of the building will be ensured by using wooden pellet (*) for 80%, which will in addition come from local sourcing.
    The remaining 20% will be from electricity mainly produced from water power stations: the “greenest source” to produce electricity.

  • The setting up of a “double flow ventilation system” will enable us to reduce heat loss as we renew ambient air.

  • Lighting, heating and external fenestration windows will be automatically adjusted using a dedicated “building management system” so that the power consumption is optimised.

  • The use of “best in class” building materials and equipments (e.g. innovative glass windows / architecture) to improve insulation and minimise our environmental footprint.
  • Strategically placed windows will provide daylight in offices and the warehouse, making it possible to both save energy as well as give employees natural lighting.

On social aspects, our new building will provide - in addition to a new working atmosphere - improved working conditions for our staff. They will especially benefit from:
  • A proper cafeteria equipped with new equipment to ensure a more pleasant break.
  • A suitable and bigger cloakroom adhering to our “health & safety” requirements.
  • A conveyor particle between the mezzanine and the ground floor in order to minimise manual handling of goods.

Finally, from an economic point of view, Lyreco expects to reduce operation and maintenance costs whilst we occupy our new sustainable building.

We are now eager to have it operational!

(*) Wooden pellets are a renewable fuel made of ground, low-grade green and dry wood and other biomass by-products and wastes compressed into wood pellets.
Wood pellets are considered to be "CO2 neutral" by many environmentalists, which basically means that even though they do produce CO2 when burned, the material was once part of a tree that lived on CO2, so the two factors cancel each other out.
